Capacitor Readings: The $75 Fix That Can Save You Thousands

Your AC’s capacitor is like the starter battery for your compressor and fan motor. If it’s weak, your system struggles to start up and struggles to run efficiently (i.e. the compressor and the fan motor run too HOT)! If it fails completely, your compressor may not turn on at all—or worse, it could burn out, leading to a $3,000+ replacement.

Here’s the thing: capacitors don’t usually fail all at once. They get weaker over time. That’s why we test them now before summer stress takes them down for good. If we find one that’s not reading perfectly, we highly recommend swapping it now for around $75.

Pro Tip

If your AC made a strange humming noise before starting last year or struggled to turn on, a weak capacitor could have been the reason.
